Horizon E-mail
A better e-mail system is on your horizon. Cal State East Bay is partnering with Google to allow all students to better manage their university e-mail accounts. Beginning March 26, students may start using their new Horizon e-mail. Each student will need to log in to the new system to begin using a new Horizon account to continue receiving important messages from the university.

Why do I need Cal State East Bay's Horizon e-mail?
- Use your Cal State East Bay Horizon e-mail to check for important messages from the university, your professors and friends. The Google e-mail service is a simple interface and works with the same Horizon e-mail address you have now.
Why is Cal State East Bay changing the student e-mail service provider?
- Cal State East Bay strives to provide the best service possible to students. The Google system offers new features including indexed search, enhanced spam filtering, tagging capabilities for tracking e-mails, and an expanded 6-gigabyte storage capacity.
How do I start using my new account?
- The first time you visit the Horizon system, available beginning March 26, you may begin using your new account. Go to the
Horizon Web page to log in to your new account:
http://horizon.csueastbay.edu .
Using your NetID and password, log in to begin using your e-mail account. The first time you log in you will need to accept Google's Terms of Agreement. After that you are ready to send and receive mail.
Will my e-mail address change?
- No, your e-mail address will be the same as it is now.
How do I forward my Horizon mail to my personal e-mail account?
- To have your new Horizon e-mail forwarded to your personal e-mail account, set your forwarding preferences under "Settings." If you previously had your e-mail forwarding set up, you will need to set it up again in the new Horizon system to have the same service.
If I have a question about my Horizon e-mail whom can I contact?
- Go to the Learning Commons in the Library or the Student Information Lobby in Warren Hall on the Hayward Campus. Students at the Concord Campus can visit the Academic Services Building for assistance.
How do I access my Horizon e-mail?
- Log in to the Cal State East Bay Horizon Web page http://horizon.csueastbay.edu
I already have a personal Gmail account, do I still need the Horizon student e-mail?
- Yes, your Horizon student e-mail is not the same account as a personal Gmail account. You still need your Horizon student e-mail account to receive official notices from the university and messages from your professors.
Will my old messages be sent to my new account?
- Yes, the messages in your old Horizon inbox will be moved to your new Horizon account by March 28.
How long can I access my old Horizon e-mail account?
- You may access your old Horizon e-mail account from March 28 to June 15, 2008. You will not be able to send nor receive messages from the old account after March 28. After June 15, the old Horizon e-mail service will no longer be available.
How do I import Contacts into Horizon student e-mail?
- You will need to create a new contacts list (address list) in the new system. The old Horizon will be available until June 15, 2008 for you to copy your old addresses and import them into the new Horizon e-mail Contacts folder. Where can I learn more about using the e-mail system powered by Google?
- View this tour to learn how to send and receive messages. You must have Quicktime to view these files, http://www.google.com/mail/help/tour/start.html . After you begin using your new account, review the "Switching Guide" inside the new e-mail system for more information on getting started with Google e-mail.
Will there be advertising inside my new e-mail account?
- No. You will not receive ads inside your new e-mail. You may select to receive RSS news feeds along the top bar of the message window, or choose to turn off this feature.
Can I use other Google applications such as calendar or chat from my Horizon account?
- No, the university service does not provide these features as part of the Horizon student e-mail system.
How do I access my messages from other e-mail programs using IMAP/POP?

You can access your new Horizon account from other e-mail programs. Go to the IMAP setup for Horizon instructions by clicking here.
To synchronize your password, go to http://www.csueastbay.edu/netid/. Click on 'Students,' then 'Change Your NetID Password'. Check the checkbox marked 'Students: Check this box to synchronize.' This will synchronize your Horizon password with your NetID password. Your NetID password will be encrypted and sent to and stored at Google in encrypted format for secure login purposes.
What if I don't want to switch to the new service?
- Cal State East Bay's existing student e-mail service will be turned off after students are transitioned to the new Horizon e-mail service. In order to check your official messages from the university, you must use the new Cal State East Bay Horizon student e-mail service powered by Google.
How secure is my personal data?
- The new Horizon student e-mail service is password protected and your personal data is secure. If you forward your e-mail to another e-mail address, the university cannot protect the privacy of your information.
What is the Cal State East Bay student e-mail privacy policy?
- Students are protected under federal laws (FERPA) regarding communications from the university. Cal State East Bay employees are trained to protect the privacy of student data records.
What is Google's privacy policy for this e-mail service?

How can I set up a spam filter?
- Instructions about "Filtering" are located on the menu inside the new Horizon e-mail system.
