Introduction
The Biotechnology Certificate Program (BCP) was established in 1986. The BCP is a competitive, limited enrollment program emphasizing close supervision and instruction in current theoretical and practical training in molecular life sciences. The program is staffed by research faculty from the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry. Over the past sixteen years the BCP has placed well over 230 graduates in the biotechnology industry and in government and academic laboratories.

Each course is ten weeks in length and most feature a minimum of 60 hours of hands on training. The current curriculum was designed after extensive consultation with representatives from academic and commercial laboratories in biotechnology.

Facilities
The Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry at Cal State Hayward have several well equipped teaching laboratories dedicated to the Biotechnology curriculum. Support includes a cell culture facility, a DNA sequencing facility, an excellent library, modern computing facilites, and a center for optical and electron microscopy.

Advisory Board
The BCP has established an advisory composed of scientists from the following companies and institutions. The purpose of the Advisory Board is to advise the BCP on curriculum and career opportunities.

Bayer Corporation
Genentech Inc.
Geron
Exelixis Pharmaceuticals
Gilead Sciences
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Financial Considerations
The tuition and fees for resident students admitted to the BCP program will be approximately $850 per quarter. Non-resident students will pay the regular tuition plus an additional $188 per unit. The BCP has two scholarships available through the generosity of Berlex Biosciences and Matthew Spitzer. These scholarships pay fees, tuition, and book charges for two quarters.
