Chabot Community College Outreach

Dr. Dan Alex from Chabot Community College has been utilizing the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at MAGIC to study Drosophila melanogaster. Shown below are just a few of the SEM images he has  produced.

 

This is an adult male Drosophila. The cracking in the background is from the mounting media.

The antenna of the fly, the main sensory organ of the insect.
The compound eye of the fly.

The entire leg structure. You might be able to recognize the sensory hairs on the leg.
The tarses, or foot, of the fly.
