Eligibility

  • Enrollment at Cal State East Bay for one quarter prior to departure
  • Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.7
  • Upper division standing (90 quarter units) by the time you study overseas
  • Undergraduate students only
  • Completion of all required remedial courses prior to departure

Language Requirement

  • None, but one quarter of Japanese preferred

About Okayama University

Okayama University is one of the largest universities in Japan. Exchange students will be studying at the main Tsushima Campus located in the suburbs, rich in nature and away from the city-noises. Okayama University has an established exchange program and Cal State East Bay students will study among other exchange students from the United States, Thailand, Australia, the United Kingdom. Exchange students will reside in the on-campus International House. Dorm life will offer opportunities to make friends from more countries such as China and Korea while activities and sports will put students in touch with the Japanese university students.

About Okayama

Okayama City is the capital of Okayama Prefecture populated by approximately 610,000 people. The city contains historic sites such as Okayama Castle and Kibitsu Shrine and is home to one of Japan's three most beautiful gardens, Korakuen. Although the area is known for its mild climate, Okayama does experience four distinct seasons. The city lies on one of Japan's famous bullet-train (Shinkansen) lines and cities such as Osaka (1 hr), Kyoto (1 hr), Tokyo (4 hrs), and Fukuoka (2 hrs) are accessible via this transport. Okayama is also a hop to Shikoku, one of Japan's main islands.

Housing

Students reside in the International House located just a few minutes' walk from campus. All rooms are single with a small bathroom and refrigerator. Some rooms have a small kitchenette included while others share kitchen facitilities. No meal plans available.

Estimated Costs

As exchange students, you pay Cal State East Bay fees in addition to round-trip airfare, room and board, and personal expenses. Cal State East Bay fees are due before departing to Okayama. Tuition at Okayama is waived.

  • Accommodations: ¥ 101,400
  • Books: ¥ 9,000
  • Food: ¥ 330,000
  • Insurance (as required by Japanese government): ¥ 12,000
  • Misc. Expenses: ¥ 200,000 (shopping, entertainment, travel, etc.)

Students are required to have medical insurance coverage that is valid in Japan and in any additional countries you plan to travel to. You should also plan funds for emergencies.

Financial Aid

Financial aid, except for work study, may be applied towards the CSUEB Bilateral Exchange Programs. Be sure to speak with your Financial Aid Counselor before applying. It is the responsibility of the student to discuss with his/her Financial Aid Counselor the minimum number of units the student must complete during the study abroad program.

Scholarships

Please note that scholarship deadlines vary and may not be at the same time as the program application deadline.

Association of International Education, Japan (JASSO) offers scholarships for students applying to Okayama University as an exchange student. Successful recipients receive a monthly stipend (¥80,000) and one time relocation allowance available upon arrival (¥150,000). The application for the JASSO scholarship is available at the Center for International Education.

The Bridging Scholarship (link opens in new window) is administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ). Successful recipients receive $2,500 to $ 4,000 depending on length of program. Deadline to apply is April 1 for Fall and academic year and October 3 for the Spring semester. For more information and to apply, please contact ATJ at 303-492-5487 or refer to the website.

The Gilman Scholarship (link opens in new window), administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), offers a competition for awards for study abroad, for US citizen undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. Check website for deadlines and applications.

Boren Awards for International Study) (link opens in new window) is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). This program offers grants to study abroad in less-traditional regions of the world. This excludes Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. NSEP grants have a service obligation. The CSUEB NSEP deadline is January 12. All interested candidates must speak with the Exchange Program Advisor prior to submitting the application.
